About Tyson

Hello! Tyson Marlow is a second-year master’s student at Vanderbilt University in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. He graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor’s in psychology and has worked in research, clinical behavioral, and academic settings. Tyson is greatly invested in social justice in all facets, particularly through therapeutic practice and healing, where his interests include exploring and understanding internalized oppression and it’s affects on marginalized communities, mental health counseling outcomes for men, and dismantling harmful stigmas in marginalized communities surrounding mental health. He is incredibly eager to work under exceptional supervisors and clinicians who will help him begin his journey into the mental health field.

Tyson utilizes a more generalized, eclectic approach, drawing from the existential/humanistic, relational-cultural, trauma-informed, multicultural, and social justice/liberation-oriented approaches to promote healing, support, and well-being in his clients. He approaches counseling with extended patience, open-mindedness, humor, and an eye towards collaborative strategy, while holding space for any and all of the nuanced complexities of being a human.

Tyson works with adolescents and young adults, especially marginalized male youth and young men, but is incredibly eager to work with anyone wanting to begin the therapeutic process. He is open to any and all issues coming into the therapy space, and is particularly interested in working with anxiety, depression, internalized oppressions, stigma, social challenges, trauma, family and relationships, systemic issues, and emotional development.  Outside of graduate studies, working at the Vanderbilt Student Recreation Center, and interning at Mindful Nashville, he loves films, thrifting, skating, spending time with friends, and watching anime.

Beyond continuing his counseling training, Tyson hopes to become an active and vocal social justice activist through community engagement and grassroots advocacy, working extensively with marginalized, underserved and under-resourced youth and their communities. For Tyson, collective healing requires a group effort by communities and networks of people to uplift, support, and encourage all areas of health for the individuals in their congregation, as well as the collective whole through means of education, personal growth, practice, unconditional support, and a collective sense of justice for every individual regardless of background.
